Creating a Masterpiece {of sorts}

Today is Pinterest Challenge Day over at Young House Love! Woo to the hoo!

It’s the day where you show off your “Pinspiration” and then your version of it. How fun!

{Check out the host’s projects! Sherry, Erin, Katie, and Ana.}

{Normally we do “Things I Love” on Wednesdays. For the month of November we’ll be talking about what we are grateful for instead. But for today… I’m doing this! I’ll be back Friday with what I’m grateful for.}

I recently pinned these two pieces of original artwork onto one of my Pinterest boards.

Michelle Armas

{pinned here}

Jen Ramos: Cocoa and Hearts

{pinned here – actually a repin of one Sherry’s pins from Young House Love, go figure}

They probably aren’t what I normally would be drawn to, but for some reason I LOVED them. Maybe it was the pink and aqua? Maybe because sometimes my life feels a little bit like that? I don’t know, but I do know that I really liked them! And think they are quite lovely!

While I’ve been thinking about adding some “real” artwork to our home, that’s not really in the budget right now.

So instead, I did a little knock off. Granted, it’s not as gorgeous as the gorg artwork done by the real artists, but I do like how it turned out!

I also took a cue from Angela over at The Painted House {she’s a real artist} and let the boys help me. {Angela did a great post about painting with children.}

And here is our completed artwork!

I realize it’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but I really love it. As my sister said, “It’s mod and personal” what’s not to love?

I chose to hang it in our dining room.

Love!

{Admittedly, I think I should have had Nolan hang it a smidge lower. And the buffet is in the process of being set up for Miss M’s birthday. Which is today!}

$6ish it  is much more in the budget than the $425 and $2000 price tags the real stuff is going for. Although…I’d still love to own some originals someday!

In case you’re curious…I just used a piece of MDF we had as a “canvas.” I primed it with…ahem…Kilz first. Then used a couple of {should I admit this?} samples of paint I picked up at Home Depot for the base colors. The rest were all acrylics that you buy in the bottles at Michaels. Oh, and the aqua was an Oops! sample I picked up at Home Depot too. No, it’s not fancy, but…It works!

My chandelier wanted to be in every shot, so I gave her her own spotlight just to make her happy.

You recognized the lamp shades, did you? Yep, they’re the other 2 from the set of 4 from my pile ‘o projects. I don’t intend to leave them all pink and brown polka-dottie, but they actually kind of work for now!

Soooooo….If anyone wants to commission an “original” piece of artwork, I’ll be taking orders in the comments. ;)

    I have been meaning to have the kids do this for a wall in our basement. Now I have been inspired to make it really happen. Thanks for inspiring me. :) How were you able to hang the one you did? I really like it by the way. Great job!

  2. Great job! When people admire it and you tell them you and the boys did it, they’ll be incredulous. My mother used to hang my son’s artwork in fancy frames in her dining room and everyone thought she had been to a gallery. I don’t think it was the art itself but the respect she gave it. Good going on all counts. Jo @ Let’s Face the Music

  3. I saw your link on YHL and had to stop by!

    I have been OBSESSED with this kind of art (I have drooled over both of your inspiration photos for a few months) for quite some time. I can’t afford any custom art, but have been dreaming about maybe one day trying to make some of my own. I just love all the colors that can be brought in with just one painting.

    Yours is amazing, seriously! The color pallet is very interesting, which I love, and you definitely put your own spin on it. Now I’m encourage and inspired to try this on my own!

    I joined the challenge, too. You can view my entry if you would like here: http://www.redheadinruffledflats.com/2011/11/pinterest-challenge-changing-shades.html

    I really like this! I think you did a really good job recreating the inspiration paintings. You have a good amount of each color in there, and it’s very well composed I think! I always feel like when I try to do this kind of thing it’s always either “too much” or “too little”. Baaa… :) Anyway, nice work!

  5. Ohhh I love this idea. I want to do it. Beautiful job!!!

  6. This turned out beautifully! Usually when people try to make their on abstract art its not quite there, but yours looks great! Especially with that fabulous buffet! Love love love :)

    This is stunning!

    I love how this looks! Something about the colors in the space makes me really really like it, which is unusual because I don’t really fancy abstract art half the time. So sweet- and even better because you got your kids involved (and I am 100% for using sample paint for anything and everything, particularly when it turns out lovely like this!)

    I’m really impressed and I’ve been wanting to do the same thing with Michelle Armes’ pieces, so thank you for showing me it truly can be done!!! did you do much planning regarding the color choices for your room?

  10. it looks GREAT! I’ve been all over those Michelle Armas paintings, but I need to wait for my money tree to start sprouting… I might take your approach, it turned out amazing!

    I’ve been wanting a BIG piece, never thought to use MDF, thanks for the idea. Your painting is very nice, definitely caught my eye.

  17. Yours is plenty gorgeous, don’t sell yourself short. I LOVE DIY and dabble in painting myself, so I especially enjoy seeing this beautiful work of art. You should be really proud. It really “pops”. Gorgeous blog, by the way.
