Organizing My Little Girl’s Bows {or How I Made an Adorable Barrette Holder}

When I found out I was going to have a baby girl I was so excited about all things girlie! Not the least of which was the fact that she could wear bows and pigtails and headbands and all sorts of cute girlie things having to do with girl hair.

Initially I stored all her pretty hair bows and barrettes and headbands and hats in the top drawer of her changing table. However, as you can see, as the bows multiplied, it became harder and harder to find the one bow I wanted in the jumbled {beautiful} mess of bows {and headbands and hats}.

Enter the barrette hanger!

Now, this style of bow hanger is no new solution, but I made my own and I’m so happy with the way it turned out. It’s pretty straightforward, so no full-blown tutorial or anything, but here’s the short of how I made it!

I started by purchasing a plain, prettily shaped pine plaque and an “m” at Micheal’s.

I didn’t plan to prime it, but…it needed it because it was soaking up the paint like crazy. So Nolan spray primed it for me. Then I got down to business.

White for the “m” and around the plaque edge. Leftover oops! paint from my “masterpiece” for the top.

I’m a girl who loves a little bling. Not too much mind you, but just enough. :) With my trusty glue pen and Martha glitter {check out the “Adore Him” sign for specifics}, I glued and glittered part of the plaque’s edge and all around the side edge of the “m.”

Nolan spayed clear-coat over the whole thing to keep the glitter from coming off all the time {it does dull the glitter slightly, but in this case it was a necessary evil}.

I hot glued the “m” to the front and the ribbons to the back. {I might add two more ribbons to either side…we’ll see.}

Loooove it! {be sure to read that in a sing-song voice}

Initially I was going to hang it behind the door to her room so it’d be out of the way, but it turned out so cute that I didn’t want to hide it away! So I decided to hang it on Miss M’s closet door.

Here’s the plain jane door before.

What?! I put a hole in her closet door? Nope! 3M command hooks are a lifesaver in situations where you don’t want a nail hole!

Boooooring. {Man, I really need to get some cute knobs! Or at least paint those.}

And the view straight into the room. Love that view!!

And here’s the door with the barrette holder.

I’m not much of a visual clutter person, so all that color going on may get to me after awhile and it may end up behind the door anyway. But for now, I’m enjoying it!

And the view straight into her room. This is what you see when you look down the hallway from our living room. I LOVE seeing those sweet outfits on her wall.

Wanna close-up of her bow collection?

And there are still a few that haven’t made it to the ribbon hanger yet. :) If I get any more bows, I’m definitely going to need to add more hanging ribbons!

Having them all visible like that makes it so much easier to find the hair bow I want!

:::happy sigh::: I love having a little girl.

I’ve been thinking about creative and easily accessible ways to store her headbands and hats. I’ve got some ideas, but if you’ve got one, I’d love to hear it!

{PS – My only change if I were to do it again would be to space the ribbons out a tiny bit more so the bows don’t crowd each other quite so much. But it’s really not a big deal.}

    Jenna, great job! It is very cute and practical. I have seen somewhere that they used an old oatmeal container and wrapped it with decorative paper. Then they put the headbands around it and in it. Just thought I would pass that idea along.:)
