I’ve shown you pictures of our hall bath before…
In this post.
And this post.
And though I like the simplicity of what we had going on in there as far as color, I thought painting the tub would be fun.
I love having a claw foot tub. It just seems so weirdly awesome to me. LOL
Here it is after my handy hubby sanded it down a bit:
(It had a little bit of peeling going on,
as well as some paint drips from the previous paint job.)
And here it is now!
The yellow turned out a little brighter than I anticipated, but I like it. :)
A couple of helpful hints, in case you decide to do something like this…
- Sanding is definitely necessary for the paint to bond well
and for a smooth surface to paint a design on. (Use a sanding block… you’ll thank me.)
- Using semi-gloss or glossy paint is a good idea since it’s in the bathroom.
(I used semi-gloss)
- You can sketch the design on lightly with a pencil, but I just went for it and didn’t look back.
It’s more fun that way.

This is beautiful! I am really impressed!
This is amazing! Love it!
I love your bathtub! You did an amazing job. But, I couldn’t help to notice that mirror above the bathtub. I love it! Is that a DIY project?
Thanks, Noe! Actually, I have a post coming up (maybe I’ll go ahead and do that sooner than later!) about that mirror. It’s a ‘partial-DIY’… you’ll see! Come back and check it out!
Way cute!
Oh my goodness, this is absolutely gorgeous! I’m so impressed that you could paint it so perfectly without a stencil or anything! I would love to recreate this someday.
How did you do this….what paint and what stencil….etc. We just bought a house and it has a clawfoot tub in it and I love this but i want to do it in black and white. Just wondering where to start. If you could help that would be great…thanks
Congrats on your new house, Gina! It’s sooooo much fun, isn’t it… and a claw foot tub too? We are lucky girls, aren’t we?
Well, as far as painting the tub… I [my husband] just sanded the tub down, painted it with semi-gloss paint (just the wall paint that you can have colored at Lowes/HD), and free-handed the swirly thingies… no stencil… I just found a design that I liked on Pinterest and mimicked it on the tub. This design in particular was very forgiving… stenciling on a tub could be difficult because of the curves. Are you doing a black design on a white background or a white design on a black background?
