31 Days :: Let’s Talk Bananas

So, I came across this idea on Pinterest, to lengthen the life of your bananas.

It caught my attention because we ALWAYS have bananas in the house. A lot of the time, they ripen too quickly and I have no idea why… some seem to ripen much faster than others too.

I don’t remember where I saw this first, because I didn’t pin it, but they said covering the stems of your bananas with aluminum foil will keep them from ripening quickly.

I figured it was worth a try… So the next time I picked up bananas, I wrapped some foil around ‘em and took some pics for a whole week so you (and I) could see if this little tip from Pinterest would work or not!

Here are the results:

I pulled one banana off on Day 2 so I could see the difference between it and the bunch,
and honestly, there wasn’t much [if any] difference.

I would conclude that it was ineffective to wrap them in foil.

So, I guess this technically isn’t a Simple Solution…
it’s a suggestion to avoid this ‘Simple Solution’ if you see it on Pinterest!  LOL
I did the dirty work for you :)

    Well, I’ve read that separating your banana bunch slows down the ripening. That’s what we do. So, I it works your single banana would also ripen slower….
    Not sure what works.

    I saw this on pinterest using plastic wrap.
    It was a fail for me.

    You don’t know if you don’t try.

    I always thought that covering the stems prevented insects from laying eggs in them. Not prolonging the life of the fruit, but increasing the quality of the fruit while it ripens. Fruit, from my limited knowledge, ripens according to temperature and air quality, independent of covering any stems…. after all, it is plant based.

    And like all plants, they attract insects, who either pollinate them, or lay eggs in them for the tiny larvae to nourish itself with. Therefore, covering them stems prevents them from doing that. At least, that’s why I do it. I would love to know the facts on this.
