We have a winner!
Olivia and her husband recenlty brought two sweet little twin boys to their forever home! How fitting that she should win the Family Name Sign.
Congrats, Olivia!
All of you all are winners in my book!
I learned something new yesterday!
If you’ve been around long, you know I love my Kindle! I do probably 80% {maybe more!} of my reading on my Kindle. It’s so convenient! I especially love that I can get library books without leaving home. Woo hoo!
When I first got my Kindle and read through various info that came with it I remember seeing something about lending out books.
Well, I finally figured out what that was all about!
{Thanks, Tina, for asking if you could borrow my copy of The Insanity of God! Blogged about here if your interested in my thoughts on that book. A MUST read.}
And I thought…Maybe you fellow Kindle owners would like to know about it too.
So here’s the really basic, basics of how it works.
You go to your “Manage Your Kindle” page on Amazon.
Here’s mine {ooohhh…you get a peek at what I’ve got on my Kindle right now!}
On the far right are these little “action” buttons:
Up close:
Now, if you click the little drop down arrow, it will display a menu, like so:
See “Loan this title” down there:
Yep! You need to click on that!
Just so you know – not all titles can be loaned. That’s up to the publisher or whoever holds the rights. Also, the loan is only for 14 days. And you can only loan a book once.
But it’s still totally worth sharing!
So…Click “Loan this title” and you’ll go to this page:
Fill in the recipient’s email, name, and a message – click “Send now” and you’re finished!
You can’t read the book when it’s loaned out. Just like you couldn’t read a paper book if you loaned it out.
Amazon sends an email to the recipient letting them know they have a book on loan, and telling them how to access it.
And that’s that!
Cool, huh?!
I also think it’s worth noting that just like you don’t have to own a Kindle to read Kindle books, you don’t have to own a Kindle to read a loaned Kindle book. You can get Amazon’s free Kindle reading app for you PC, Mac, iPhone, Android, etc.
What do you think? Will you loan out your Kindle books?
I think this is a fabulous feature! My only “issue” is that I wish they’d let you loan them out more than once…like maybe five times? Once just doesn’t seem like enough. But! I’m grateful for even that option!
So glad I learned how to do this!
Go here to Amazon’s Kindle help page to read more about it.
{I am an Amazon Affiliate, and this post contains a few affiliate links. If you choose to click on a link and purchase something, I will make a small percentage. Amazon did not ask my to right this review of push their product. I choose to tell you about it because I love this product and the book loaning option.}
April is gone-zo. I can hardly believe it!
May means the last month of school. {Whoa.} And that summer is just around the corner! {Yippee!} It means the days are turning hot, hot, hot. The sun is shining bright. And we have afternoon thunderstorms. May means that we are almost to the halfway mark in this “new year.”
As I do at the end of each month, here’s a recap of what I’ve been reading.
I read two of the BEST books. Two books that I think just about everyone should read.
First MUST READ book. Dare I say, life changing, eye-opening, “wow God.” Yeah, it was that good.
The Insanity of God: A True Story of Faith Resurrected by Nik Ripken
In my {very humble opinion}, I think this book was mis-titled. I told Nolan about it and he said he wouldn’t read it purely based on the title. Calling God “insane” flies in the face of everything we believe. I read it on the recommendation of our Worship Pastor, and I’m SO GLAD I could look past the title and dig in. It was excellent!
“Nik” {which is an alias} is a current day missionary. This is the story of he and his family’s journey as they learn about how God uses persecution to forward His work. God never promises us life will be easy, but He promises He will be with us. I have it SO easy in my Christian walk here in America. There are people around the world whose faith is probably a million times deeper than mine because of the hard persecution they have walked through. I know that God has me here for a purpose. But I pray I never loose sight of the bigger picture.
I want to do this book justice, so I’ll be quiet now and riddle you with quotes…
Does God, in fact, promise His children safety?
Do things always work out for those who are obedient?
Does God really ask us to sacrifice – and to sacrifice everything?
What happens when our best intentions and most creative ideas are not enough?
Is God at work in the hard places? And does He expect us to join Him in those hard places?
Isn’t it possible to love God and to pretty much keep living the life I already have?
What does it really mean for God to tell us that His ways are not our ways?
Would He really allow people who love Him dearly to fail? And, if so, is this a God who can use even holy failure for His purposes?
Those are deep, hard questions. Those are questions we ask from the depths of our hearts when our faith is shaken. I think we need to know the answer to these questions. Nik explores his own life journey in the face of these questions. It was so challenging to my faith and encouraging to my soul!
Through a great personal loss, and not knowing how to reach the people of Somalia with Jesus – where Christians were put to death routinely and the goal was for them to be extinct in their country. Nik set out to learn about how God uses persecution in the Church. You have to read the story to learn more! But I love this quote and thing it’s a good summary:
I had always assumed that persecution was abnormal, exceptional, unusual, out of the ordinary. In my mind, persecution was something to avoid. It was a problem, a setback, a barrier. I was captivated by the thought: what if persecution is the normal, expected situation for a believer? And what if the persecution is, in fact, soil in which faith can grow? What if persecution can be, in fact, good soil?
Wow…Getting God’s perspective of persecution. Not seeking it out. But allowing the persecutions and difficulties we face to grow our faith. Not to run away from the hard things, but to embrace them by trusting God!
One huge element that I took away – not that I didn’t know it, but I needed to be reminded – was to put Truth in my heart NOW. To actively memorize Scripture and songs of worship. To not become passive in my faith, but continue to grow and be active. And to do the same for my children. To be active in teaching them Scripture. They will need it!
He said that He was sending them “as sheep among wolves.” Still, He expected them to prevail. In the history of the world, no sheep has ever won a fight with a wolve. The very idea is insane.
God’s way is so contrary to our own selfish thinking and the current of the world. From the outside looking in, God may seem “insane.” But we know that His ways are indeed higher than our ways! And they are the best ways!
Ok…….Go read the book!
The Shape of Mercy: A Novel by Susan Meissner
I loved this historical fiction book. A current day college student is hired to transcribe a journal from the Salem witch trials hundreds of years ago. Such a well-written book, and a beautiful read.
Speaking from Among the Bones: A Flavia de Luce Novel by Alan Bradley
You know I love Flavia de Luce. She never fails to intrigue me.
Desperate: Hope for the Mom Who Needs to Breathe by Sarah Mae & Sally Clarkson
I could write a whole entire post on this book, and I just might do that sometime soon. But, please, please – if you are a mom, especially a mom of young children you NEED TO READ THIS!!
Full of grace, insight, encouragement, realness…ahh…I read it quickly because it was like taking a huge drink of cool water on a hot day. I can’t wait to go back and underline and highlight and do some more chewing on what was written.
I walked away encouraged to live a life of grace. Giving grace to myself knowing that God loves me. Giving grace to my children knowing that they are imperfect and need my love and grace. Encouraged to be more intentional with them. And also encouraged that life is hard, motherhood is hard, but God is greater! Encouraged to take time away for myself with the Lord and to recharge – there’s no guilt in that! I could go on an on.
So, mamas, please read it. I don’t think you will be disappointed!
That’s what I’ve been reading this month! How about you?

I just got back last night from of wonderful weekend full of this…
But I’m still in vacation mode!
Back tomorrow {hopefully} with a “real” post!
In the mean time… Did you enter the giveaway yet?!?! Giving away a Custom Family Name Sign by Sarah!
Yep!
You read that right!
It’s time for another giveaway here on Delighting in Today! It’s been awhile, it’s nice to have a new giveaway for you!
Sarah mentioned it in her post a few weeks back, but she recently opened an Etsy shop.
Have you check it out yet?
You should! Lots of great stuff going on over there…
There are a couple of printable invites. But she’s also got these lovely, wonderful, you’ll-want-them-in-your-home hand painted signs on reclaimed wood. They are fab!
Like this…Share Your Toys…
And this…I Love You More than Coffee…
And this…He Will Come to Us Like the Rain…
All of those great things are in the shop!
Today though, for one of you, my lovely readers, Sarah is offering a Custom Family Name Sign like this…
Sweet, huh?
I think family is so important. And being a part of a family is a huge deal, and probably something we too often take for granted. Those of us {which is most of us} that are in families – we are so blessed! What an awesome reminder this sign could be! A reminder that you are part of a family. That you belong.
Sarah and her family are working towards adding some children to their family who need a family! Children who don’t have a place where they belong.
The money that she makes through her shop they are using to help fund the adoption and everything that involves. Isn’t that a fabulous thing?!
So, how do you win?!
We’ll be using the Rafflecoptor form as we usually do…
Required first entry – leave a comment on the blog:
Additional optional entries:
Fine print: This giveaway is only open to those with a US shipping address. The winner will be chosen at random a week from today and will be notified by email and announced on the blog. The winner will have 48 hours to respond or a new winner will be chosen.
Yo.
So I’m still stuck on the random thing today.
You still love me, right?
Do you have kids? In education? Care about what’s going down in the education realm?
Well then….take the time to educate yourself about Common Core Standards.
This is a very well-thought out article about the Common Core Standards.
Don’t let others think for you. Choose to think for yourself.
You can read more here and use the link at the end to write your Senators and ask them to sign Senator Grassley’s letter to ask the Senate Appropriates Committee to stop future funding for The Common Core State Standards. Today is the last day to do this!
These green pants from Kohl’s are on my “to buy” list {once they go on sale some more}.
I’m really loving that color a whole lot! And you know I love me some colored pants!
I mentioned I needed to figure out how to style my round table. It’s slowly making progress.
This was a great article with pictures to get me started!
A fellow homeschooling mom tipped me off the this site…
T LOVES it! He loves that he gets to do “fun” math. He thinks it’s fun because it’s on the computer. I think it’s fun because he’s learning and practicing his skills without me making him!
They have all kinds of math starting with basic 1 digit addition up to algebra and probably more. They also have other subjects like science.
So far we’ve only used the math, and it’s been great!
Easy for him to use. Leaves which equal points. Badges to earn. Lightning bolts for speed. All great incentives for him to keeping trying and to love learning!
Great resource for you moms and educators out there!
Oh, and did I mention it was free? Yeah! Go check it out!
I’m realllllllly loving this rug. Really, really.
Wish it could come home and live with me!
Cream, cable-knit coziness at its best.
Well, that’s enough randomness for today!
I’m in a bit of a writing slump. Tired + busy with lots of other things + a cold + lack of inspiration = not much to write about.
So for today…How about…
Or … 5 things you might not care to know either… File this under “random information.”
I always do my makeup from left to right. Foundation goes on the left side of the face, then the right. Eyeshadow – left eye, then right. Blush – left, then right.
Expect!
Mascara.
Mascara I always put on my right eyelashes first, then my left.
Makes no sense, even to me!
Since I was a teenager, I don’t think I’ve gone more than 3 or 4 days without nail polish on my toenails.
{Go Overboard by Essie – what I’m currently wearing}
That is probably SOOOO bad for me.
I will probably die of toe nail polish poisoning.
Stairs are my downfall.
No – for real.
I fall down them. And sometimes even fall up them.
We don’t get along. Although I will say our relationship is probably improving as we haven’t had many run-ins recently.
I HATE elevators!
As a child, I was in an elevator with my cousins at my grandparents’ time share. Someone hit the “door open” button while we were still going up, and the DOOR OPENED! I kid you not! We saw all the insides of the elevator shaft. It scared me so bad. I had nightmares about shooting out of an elevator shaft like Charlie in Willy Wonka.
I only willingly started going on elevators once I had children and couldn’t take the stroller on stairs or escalators. I still don’t like them, but I’m a whole lot better about them!
I lost a shoe and twisted my ankle during a rainstorm in one of those curbside storm drains. I spent the rest of the day hopping around on one foot while teaching a couple of guys how to crank out 20+ grilled cheese sandwiches.
I now avoid all storm drains like the plague.
And I purposefully walk around the french drains like these.
So now you know some of my quirks! Share, share alike! Tell me one of yours!
So….I love my kids. They are so cute. And each one is so special to me.
I’ve had fun with my camera the last few days, and can’t resist posting the cuteness!
Gotta get some pictures of my biggest boy!
But Mr B and Miss M kind of like mugging for the camera these days.
This series is titled:
Mr. B, Get Your Gun
And this series:
Miss M Eats a Cookie
Love these kiddos more than words can say!
I was busy, busy yesterday which meant – no time to work on a blog post for today!
We had this little cutie over in the morning. So even though there was no blog writing time, I did whip out the camera and snap a few pics!
We had a blast having Mr. L hang out with us!
Not sure Miss M was entirely feeling the love though…She did really good, but let’s face it, she normally doesn’t have to compete with other little people attention.
T sadly didn’t make it into any of the pictures. He was busy finishing up his schoolwork…
I know, I know…put the camera away already!
Ha, ha!
Hope you guys have a great weekend coming up! I’ve got lots to do!
Ya’ll.
It has been OVER A YEAR since I’ve talked about the Powder Room.
Sorry for the caps lock yelling, but…gooood.ness, that is far too long.
Alas and alack…the Powder Room is not finished and that is why I have been silent about it.
That’s just how it goes around here I guess. Sure, I’d like for that room to be finito, but…it’s not…yet.
I have asked Nolan to bump it up on the priority list, so there has been some forward progress made.
Ready for a little update?
Before we go there though, maybe you need a refresher on what’s already been done?
This is where we started.
It was beautiful back in the day…. :::sigh::: NOT! Really…I’m not sure it was beautiful even back then.
Then I found this piece of furniture at a second-hand store to transform into a vanity.
And ordered this sink and faucet.
I even picked a paint color!
And that’s about where I left you!
In January-ish of last year, my dad tore out the old vanity with the help of the boys.
Goodbye, mirror!
Goodbye, sink!
Not sure if Papa could have done it without a little help.
So that left us here! No vanity, no mirror, and a big ol’ gap in the flooring.
Well…that’s enough of an update for today!
It stayed that way for…awhile…
We have since fixed the walls with a new mud job, laid the flooring, and wired for new lighting. It’s coming along! I’ll share those details with you soon!
And just to bring a smile to your face… My goofy guys.
